Food and clothing are considered basic human needs. But sometimes even these basics are hard to obtain for some families. The poverty rate in Ballston Spa is 8.36%, higher than the 6.7% rate for Saratoga County.
Centrally located in Ballston Spa, the Thrift Shop has operated out of the Church House of the Ballston Spa United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. Built in 1845, this historic building is facing structural challenges. The Food Pantry had to be relocated as the floor could no longer support the weight of the food for the approximately 2000 annual clients.
The Thrift Shop serves our community in a variety of ways. The stories are endless of folks in need - of warm coats, clothes for job interviews, shoes for children, warm bedding, affordable dresses for prom, to name just a few. All proceeds from the Thrift Shop go directly to the Food Pantry, which serves the wider community, and has recently seen an increase in usage.
We have started restoring this community outreach building by replacing support beams, removing windows, and repairing sill plates. But much more is needed.
This project has an estimated cost of $125,000. We are asking for your financial support of this restoration, so we can continue to
serve those in need in the greater Ballston Spa area. Your thoughtful donation can be made in several ways:
